I was long out by the time fear of Smurfs came along. Witnesses back in the 80's must have got soft. When I was a Witness Witnesses were real Witnesses. We feared demons. Great hairy smelly buggers that you could only get rid of by screaming the name Jehovah not little blue fuzzy stuffed toys.

Smurf Rumors - 2 Questions
by A question inas the board no doubt knows, there was some sort of rumor in the early 1980s going around amongst the witnesses that a smurf doll came to life in the kingdom hall, or that smurfs were demonic.. 2 questions:.
1. do any not remember any such rumors though they were witnesses at the time?.
2. of those who do, did all the witnesses believe them, or otherwise, what proportion rejected the rumor as nonsense?.

My Story not for the weak of heart
by TotallyADD ina year after my parents were baptized i was born in 1954. that same year my father was appointed presiding overseer and remained in that position until the early sixties despite the fact he was still smoking.
he gained the position by default because he was the only baptized man who could read.
thus began my life course of abuse, neglect and cult thinking.

This great crowd could not have direct communication with God, but could only gain salvation through association with the chosen ones in the Society. Thus they now claimed to have replaced Jesus as the only way to salvation
Like many Jdubs I didn't know that Christ wasn't my mediator. I didn't learn till after I was out he had been replaced by the Cracker Eating Class.

Like much of what the Watchtower does it was a revelation of convenience. When they had about 200,000 people claiming to be of the 144,000 they had to come up with something so they decided to come up with another class of Christians so they went digging through the Bible for a scripture they could twist to back up their new idea. Like many false prophets the Watchtower is very short sighted. They didn't think what would happen in the future if they were wrong because they never expected to be wrong. They believed Christ had already returned and shortly the faithful guys of old would be living in San Diego spending their weekends sailing on Mission Bay or laying on the beach working on their tans. Obvious to all but the Witnesses none of their prophecies about the end of the world and Christ return ever came true or would come true so there they were in the 1930s with their numbers increasing so they created the other sheep class. Now they weren't lock in with a number. Problem solved.

DO WE NEED TO BELONG TO A RELIGION TO BE A "SPIRITUAL PERSON"?
by foodalls ini have been noticing people posting on this site have a "deep" spiritual desire, but don't quite know how to find it, or where it is at.. this beg the question...do we need to be involved with a "religion" to find "spirituality"...especially an "organized religion"???.
anyone that has there eyes open can see that all religion is loosing their influence over people around the world...i spent 47 years thinking i was in the "truth" being one of jw's!
and now that i am out...and looking back from the "outside"...all i see is that its just another religion...filled with all the "control-grid" stuff found in any other group.. worse yet...they are worse than other religions...so it begs an answer..is there such thing as a "true religion"???.

Hmmm. So everybody in Orange County, California (about 4 million people) had all their debts forgiven but the rest of the nation didn’t hear about it? Wow, the power of the government to suppress information cannot be underestimated
I live in Orange County and I'm very happy to hear about this wonderful turn of events. Wait a minute the mail just came and my Amex bill and my mortgage payment just arrived. Oh and here's my car payment.

My view of smoking is no one has ever had too many cigarettes and went home and beat their wife or got in a automobile accident because of it. It's just a nasty smelly habit.

I think you almost have to define spiritual first. To a witness you are consider spiritual if you read a lot of Watchtowers and answer at meeting. In some churches you are consider spiritual if you carry a big Bible quote a lot of scriptures and say amen a lot. I'm sure that non-Christian religions have the equivalent. To me those things seem superficial and more to do with the physical world. I think being spiritual has very little to do with any particular religion but more longing for God or some thing more than this physical world.
I go to the Episcopal Church as a preference. I like going there because there are a lot of ancient traditions yet there seems to be the ability to accept modern ideas such a evolution and treating women as equals (although some are fighting change). I don't go there to be spiritual. I can feel just as spiritual sitting on the beach staring at the ocean. I've met quite a few people that to me seem very spiritual that don't subscribe to any particular religion.
